Review: Fast & Furious over the last few installments has become all about action. And the latest outing takes it a step further. Almost 20% of the movie is comprised of action sequences. And at the expense of action, plot, writing, characters all take a backseat. But no ones complaining. Why ? Because the action makes up for all of it.Do the above statements sound cliché ??? The movies plot is full of such silly dialogs so its best ignored in the current context. What works is the action - Lin and his crew bring us some of the most ridiculously outrageous and boldly conceived action sequences. Theres an intense chase through London in the initial reels and also a race later on. Theres a whole plane take-off-crash sequence towards the end that youve probably got a glimpse of in the trailers. The girls are no slouches either and we see an intense hand-to-hand fight of sorts between Michelle Rodriguezs Letty and Gina Caranos Riley.But the movies best sequence is undoubtedly the 10 minute Tank chase across the freeway that involves most of the cast and culminates in a breathtaking catch (about which Id not say any further). The camera cuts like crazy, music is pulsating and that single sequence is probably worth the price of the movie ticket.Apart from action, Furious 6 doesnt have much going for it. Dialog is standard, at times even silly and predictable, characters are flat, performances are decent. The car chases and night scenes got me so involved, I actually felt a bit strange leaving the theater and coming out into the real worlds broad daylight. And the post-credits scene is simply, a treat which makes the next installment in the series worth looking forward to. Suffice it to say that in the end, the movie drifts full circle.Watch it for the action, and for the action alone. If you expect any sort of character development or family issues like the first installment had, youll be disappointed. Else, youre in for one hell of a ride.Score: 7 / 10

Review: As a sequel to the 2011 original, Rio 2 continues in the tradition of its older sibling with screwball humor and madcap mischief. While maintaining a pedigree for celebrating song and dance through a kaleidoscopic burst of colors, Rio 2 is gorgeously rendered but offset by a clichéd script that is also laced with classroom lecture.This sequel begins in Rio de Janeiro where our feathered friends Blu and Jewel (Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway) discover that they are not the last of their species after all. Speaking of which, lookout for a hilarious scene aimed at adults where Nigel and Gabi find themselves dramatizing one of Shakespeares greatest plays. While many such segments are genuinely funny, the story strays at times with subplots from deforestation to male bonding, before stepping into a puddle of teary-eyed melodrama. Kids laughed and adults clapped, but there were periods of silence too, and I am not referring to those brief scenes where death was implied.Emerging as a game changer in animated films, Blue Sky Studios, a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox, struck gold with its very first feature production – Ice Age (2002). Its been tunneling through a gold mine ever since. While Rio 2 might seem like a cash cow for some viewers, it is still a delightful animation with foot-tapping music to get your groove on. And like a Gloria Gaynor hit song performed by Clements Nigel, there is every reason to believe this sequel will survive.

Review: Simply put, some movies should never be remade. Battle Royale 2: Requiem serves as a stark reminder with only a few exceptions: Americanized remakes of beloved and admired foreign films inevitably result in disappointment. For viewers unfamiliar with the history behind Francis Lawrences The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the 2013 film is a remake of the cult-classic 2000 Japanese film of called BATTLE ROYALE @: REQUIEM, directed by Kenta Fukasaku. The Japanese masterpiece possess a highly stylized, gritty sensibility while providing an emotional depth to its characters. Iconic director Francis Lawrences The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is as a handsomely shot piece of genre entertainment, but it fails in its attempt to define itself, devolving into a completely pointless, watered-down underwhelming degenerate dystopia. The remake remains largely faithful to the story of the 2000 effort, but seriously lacks in intensity and a sense of meaning. The original film achieves a sublime blending of ultra-violence with extreme art, while the remake feels bogged down in its copycat status, and its overall lighter tone hampers its enigmatic, disconcerting story of revenge. My advice is to avoid this altogether, pull up the original on Netflix, and deal with the subtitles, America.

Review: Asking for your attention at all times, providing little clues in almost every sequence & still leaving you puzzled in the end, Enemy inclines more towards art house cinema than mainstream features and isnt going to please every viewer out there. It tells the story of a college professor living a mundane daily life who later seeks out his doppelgänger after spotting him in a movie thus setting in motion a chain of events which culminates with terrible consequences.Directed by Denis Villeneuve (director of Incendies & Prisoners), Enemy is an ambitious work from the director who, of lately, has been steadily rising as one of the filmmakers to watch out for and is another fine feature in his bag. The writing makes a fine adaptation from the novel its based on but also infuses more allegories & symbolism in the form of spiders into the script to keep the viewers guessing from start to finish.Performances by the cast is very good with Jake Gyllenhaal playing the college professor & his lookalike movie actor with fine subtlety & the contribution by the supporting cast is strong as well. Cinematography captures the film with a very warm colour temperature blended with high contrasts along with excellent use of lighting. The background score has a pretty muted presence in here & editing has carefully structured the film with layers after layers of visual motifs.One thing thatll bug its audience is if Jake Gyllenhaal characters are different persons or same. Other thing thatll leave them utterly confused is the ending if they still havent figured out the meaning of spiders in the film. But hints are provided throughout its runtime & repeated viewings will only help in clearing those doubts. On an overall scale, Enemy is that brain-teasing cinematic ride which viewers would either risk to experience or reject it outright. Multiple viewings advised.

Review: At first when i read about this movie I was quite interested but the name Takashi Shimizu immediately killed my interest. However since there was nothing good to watch I thought just give it a try if its boring i can turn it off. Considering Takashi Shimizu movies are poorly executed this is his most decent flick to date as stated by a previous reviewer. Its watchable, decent storyline but too rushed. If only the ending wasnt so rushed it would be a very decent horror flick.Overall it is watchable not slow like most movies directed by Japanese directors. Just dont expect anything from this movie.

Review: *I tried to leave out any major story spoilers* Its day 6 now of the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. I went to check out Open Windows, starring porn star Sasha Grey, at the Alamo Drafthouse on 6th Street downtown. I introduce her as porn star because her career as an actress has not really taken off, even after a title role in The Girlfriend Experience from Steven Soderberg, one of the greatest movie directors of all time. She was also in many episodes of Entourage on HBO. Ive been kind of rooting for her since we dont hear many stories of porn stars becoming successful movie stars. They...cant be taken seriously. The Girlfriend Experience proved that wrong. Entourage played with the idea. Now, after hearing the premise, I was expecting Ms. Grey to be embracing her career in porn and actually let us watch her through Open Windows get naked in theaters. The film...did...not...deliver. What we do get is a world of technology. Almost futuristic, the film is shown through multiple webcams and security cameras. The villain has all of these at his disposal as well as the entire internet (apparently). Whatever statement the director was trying to make, I felt was lost. The third act really lost me. Its not even worth explaining. As for the rest of it, basically, we have an actress who sucks (Sasha plays an actress whos supposed to be popular), and her number one fan has a website and is set to meet her. The villain set this up to capture her and blame him for it. There are too many twists that the director couldnt even keep up with, and there were some applaud-worthy moments that were ruined by the way the film was made. It plays like a found-footage film, but were watching it on a computer. The entire thing is real-time so it feels like its all done in one take. What it SHOULD have been... Was a Rear Window homage. Thats what I was expecting based on an article in the Austin Chronicle that actually mentioned Rear Window as if Open Windows was going to pay respects to Hitchcock. Instead, windows here arent the ones we look through to engage in voyeurism like a pervert at our favorite porn star. Theyre the ones we look at on a computer screen! Elijah Wood (oh yeah, he was in it) shouldnt have been forced to leave his hotel room, as if the director wanted us to leave our comfort zone so early, even though a car chase erupts when he chases down the bad guy. This was actually the best scene in the film, and with a low camera angle through much of it from inside the car (via webcam on laptop in passenger seat that is somehow not sliding around everywhere). That should have been the climax, because it was actually mildly gripping until it kept going, slowing down the whole pace of the film. The narrative goes crazy with twists, too. Like, too many. They didnt make sense, either. The director admitted to this in a Q&A after the show. Audience members were asked for questions, yet unwilling to participate until the director just plain asked if anyone hated it so much that they wanted to slap him. True story.This is an opportunity we should have for more directors, actually.However, this guy was SO nice, I just felt bad for him. When a shot of Makers Mark was offered, someone took the opportunity. He slapped the director on the stage. He knew his movie wasnt good. Someone did actually ask if there was any commentary about being a celebrity or our current technology. He said that were all okay with living lives that should be private and arent. This answer was unrelated to the film. I wish Sasha would have showed up at the screening. Sasha Grey was basically playing herself, in the movie, an actress even. Except, one the world has never seen naked.Thats a joke, right? This flick will not help her serious movie career.

Review: Too bad movies like this dont get a bigger budget, specially to enhance the special effects and futuristic scenarios, but that really doesnt matter when you are a creative genius like Gilliam, he does a great job with what he is given. This movie has great resemblance to his other retro futuristic movie Brazil, which combines retro and futuristic images and elements in a Dystopian chaotic Orwellian future.Here we struggle with the main character (wonderful played by Christoph Waltz) and his meaningless solitary existence hoping to get an answer by a higher power of what life is all about.So can the hero find out the meaning of life or the absence of it? and will he be willing to sacrifice his potential joy and happiness in order to get that mysterious call. Well you will be the judge.If you like this movie I also recommend PI by Aronofsky, Brazil, Blade runner, 1984, THX1138 among other great ones. Hopefully this movie will become a cult classic and show new directors that they dont require 100+ million dollars to make good sci-fi movies. Thanks and cheers to Gilliam for sticking for what he believes in and daring to tackle difficult philosophical questions and having that original fingerprint he stamps in all his great movies.
