Review: Id be surprised if anyone saw this coming. The Lego Movie is quite simply unlike anything seen in a long while: rip-roaringly hilarious, gorgeous to look at, imaginative beyond belief, a great parody of worn out chose one clichés and also rather poignant and touching. The first thing one has to mention is the animation. Not only does it look like an amateur stop-motion film with a $500 million budget, but the amount of detail and creativity put into the visuals is just staggering. At times theres so much going on the screen its almost overwhelming, yet if you look closely you can see that every single thing is comprised of recognizable Lego parts. The various ways the world shifts, breaks, is constructed again, falls apart and moves around is simply a joy to watch. The implementation of real-world objects into the otherwise plastic world is certain to get huge laughs out of anyone, especially the revelation about the ominous superweapon Kragle. The result is a film that looks unlike anything weve seen before.The script is a roller-coaster ride of hilarious gag after another. The jokes come at you so fast you cant catch them all in one viewing, and blink-and-youll-miss-it side gags clutter the screen. No running gag wears out its welcome, no joke is overplayed or overemphasised. The characters are all funny and likable with enough personality to them to fill up multiple movies on their own. Batman especially is a riotous parody of the grim, dark versions of the Caped Crusader weve been stuck with for nearly a decade. And due to Lego having rights for nearly every IP imaginable, you wont be able to guess which mega-franchise is going to turn up next. Despite all this high praise, there are a couple of minor issues. During its third act the tone of the film starts moving to a more serious and emotional direction, which to me didnt work as well as the rapid fire comedy of the rest of the film. The voicework is great for the most part, but amidst all the others it becomes rather apparent that Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson are live, not voice actors. Its not that their performances are bad, they just seem rather flat and lifeless in comparison to the rest of the cast. The Lego movie is a downright masterpiece, theres no two ways about it. Incredible visuals and animation combined with a hilarious script, dazzling creativity and good characters make it one of the best and most original animated films in a long time. Some minor hindrances can do very little to drag it down, and the end result is fantastic.

Review: Kat is a 17-year-old girl in the suburbs, growing up in the late 1980s and observing her parents dysfunctional marriage at close hand while trying to cope with first love, relationships, sex and friendships - all the growing pains that being 17 involves. When her mother disappears one day, the police think shes probably run off, perhaps with a boyfriend; Kat thinks her mother just got so fed up with her boring, empty, perfect-housewife life that she finally left it to find something better. Kat herself doesnt know how she feels about that; truly, she doesnt really feel much of anything, especially because her mother had recently been so intrusive in her life. Her father seems meek and lost after her mother leaves, but both of them will eventually have to pick up the pieces and go on. If only Kat would stop having those disturbing dreams about where her mother might be....This is really far more of a coming-of-age story than it is anything else; aside from some dream images, theres very little that would fit the term fantastical, even though I saw it at Montreals Fantasia Festival. There is some very fine acting, from Eva Green as the mother, Shailene Woodley as Kat, Christopher Meloni as Kats father and Thomas Jane as a police detective, and both writer/director Gregg Araki (from the novel by Laura Kasischke) and the cast do a very good job of capturing that confusing stage of adolescence, where one is not quite fully grown up but is certainly not at all a child anymore either. I very much enjoyed the film, even if Fantasia is an odd place to see it!

Review: Laika has been well known of their artistic talent to bring back the old-time style of making an animation by creating different emotions of the characters through small figurines and hand movements in a designed board, but unfortunately and surprisingly that the concept and screenplay for this third repeating effort seems to be a little bit underwhelming. While ParaNorman looks much more fun, interesting and appealing to general audiences, though boxtrolls themselves are adorable enough to attract the kids, they are dull and the slow progressing of the first half of the film might bored the parents. However, the strong casts who voice all the characters in the film especially Ben Kingsley as the villain though looks hilarious, but great enough to make the second half the film, at least to look more attracting, bringing on an inspiring message to remind audiences to be the real of yourself.

Review: When I received an invite to go to the screening of Third Person, I was a bit uncertain whether this would be a decent flick or not. I hadnt seen any trailers or read articles about it so I did not know what to expect.Third person is a film from Paul Haggis ( the director of the Oscar- winning Crash) involving intertwining stories featuring Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Adrien Brody, Mila Kunis, James Franco, Maria Bello, Moran Atlas and Kim Basinger.Having not seen Crash, I hadnt raised my expectations to spectacular levels. Maybe this is why Third Person is getting a mediocre score, people simply compare it with Crash and not as an individual movie.Let me begin by stating that the atmospheric feel of the movie is top notch. Whether it is the chic, extravagant life-style in Paris, the beautiful and not-so beautiful side of Rome or the busy streets in New York, every city is portrayed in a beautiful way. The soundtrack is okay and fits with the mood of the scenes.The acting is , how could it not be with this cast, top-notch ! Especially Mila Kunis surprised me with her emotionally depth, a side of her that we dont see a lot in her movies.Of course, with different intertwining stories, people will argue which one is the best of the bundle. Let me make this clear : Each story is very intriguing and has plot twists that I did not see coming. You could feel everyone staring with great surprise at the screen when major twists came. For me, the best story was the part with Adrien Brody and Moran Atlas. They had the best chemistry in the movie, with a very interesting dilemma. It had the funniest and most-thrilling moments ( according to me of course, the others are very well made as well, this is truly a matter of personal taste ).But the movie has a big flaw. The link between the stories is rather weak ( I still have no idea how Adriens story was linked with the rest of them, when this movie releases for all audiences someone will maybe find that link ). The wrap-around at the end was very, very confusing and didnt make a lot of sense. It was surprising , yes, but really no- one understood what the ending meant for the story. But I think that if this movie gets analyzed and someone clearly explains its ending, my appreciation for this movie would certainly be of the roof.Im not the type of guy who volunteers to watch a romantic drama, I even dread the thought of watching another chick-flick/tear-buster with the girlfriend. But this drama pulled me into its story with fantastic performances from an awesome cast, good writing/directing for each storyline and a fine balance between drama, romance and humor.And for that great achievement, this movie deserves : 7,5 /10

Review: As a fan of the book, I really wasnt sure I wanted to see this movie. Great books hardly ever adapt into good films. But my friend wanted to see it, so I agreed to tag along on opening night. I have to say, as a movie, it is genuinely enjoyable. The visuals are starkly entrancing without being distracting. The casting is pitch-perfect - Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield, in particular, do a great job. The ending is particularly well done (dont worry - it wasnt really spoiled by the trailer). The problem is, its really just a caricature of the book. The drama in Battle School moves too quickly, the characters of Peter and Valentine are almost completely absent, and even Enders video game is sadly underdone. Im not usually a fan of splitting books into multiple movies, but this is one where two films would have done it justice. Also, the kids are just too old - theres an ironic moment in the movie where two officers talk about how conscripting kids under 15 used to be illegal, yet all the actors playing the kids look 15 or older!Still, its a fun ride, and if you hadnt read the book these flaws really wouldnt be apparent. Definitely see it in the theater if you can - the battle room scenes are best on a big screen.

Review: *I tried to leave out any major story spoilers* Its day 6 now of the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. I went to check out Open Windows, starring porn star Sasha Grey, at the Alamo Drafthouse on 6th Street downtown. I introduce her as porn star because her career as an actress has not really taken off, even after a title role in The Girlfriend Experience from Steven Soderberg, one of the greatest movie directors of all time. She was also in many episodes of Entourage on HBO. Ive been kind of rooting for her since we dont hear many stories of porn stars becoming successful movie stars. They...cant be taken seriously. The Girlfriend Experience proved that wrong. Entourage played with the idea. Now, after hearing the premise, I was expecting Ms. Grey to be embracing her career in porn and actually let us watch her through Open Windows get naked in theaters. The film...did...not...deliver. What we do get is a world of technology. Almost futuristic, the film is shown through multiple webcams and security cameras. The villain has all of these at his disposal as well as the entire internet (apparently). Whatever statement the director was trying to make, I felt was lost. The third act really lost me. Its not even worth explaining. As for the rest of it, basically, we have an actress who sucks (Sasha plays an actress whos supposed to be popular), and her number one fan has a website and is set to meet her. The villain set this up to capture her and blame him for it. There are too many twists that the director couldnt even keep up with, and there were some applaud-worthy moments that were ruined by the way the film was made. It plays like a found-footage film, but were watching it on a computer. The entire thing is real-time so it feels like its all done in one take. What it SHOULD have been... Was a Rear Window homage. Thats what I was expecting based on an article in the Austin Chronicle that actually mentioned Rear Window as if Open Windows was going to pay respects to Hitchcock. Instead, windows here arent the ones we look through to engage in voyeurism like a pervert at our favorite porn star. Theyre the ones we look at on a computer screen! Elijah Wood (oh yeah, he was in it) shouldnt have been forced to leave his hotel room, as if the director wanted us to leave our comfort zone so early, even though a car chase erupts when he chases down the bad guy. This was actually the best scene in the film, and with a low camera angle through much of it from inside the car (via webcam on laptop in passenger seat that is somehow not sliding around everywhere). That should have been the climax, because it was actually mildly gripping until it kept going, slowing down the whole pace of the film. The narrative goes crazy with twists, too. Like, too many. They didnt make sense, either. The director admitted to this in a Q&A after the show. Audience members were asked for questions, yet unwilling to participate until the director just plain asked if anyone hated it so much that they wanted to slap him. True story.This is an opportunity we should have for more directors, actually.However, this guy was SO nice, I just felt bad for him. When a shot of Makers Mark was offered, someone took the opportunity. He slapped the director on the stage. He knew his movie wasnt good. Someone did actually ask if there was any commentary about being a celebrity or our current technology. He said that were all okay with living lives that should be private and arent. This answer was unrelated to the film. I wish Sasha would have showed up at the screening. Sasha Grey was basically playing herself, in the movie, an actress even. Except, one the world has never seen naked.Thats a joke, right? This flick will not help her serious movie career.

Review: When I saw that Doug Liman was directing and McQuarrie penning, I was interested. I liked Limans first Bourne film over Greengrass-directed nauseating shaky-cam sequels. McQuarrie is a wonderful screenwriter, and these two seemed like a perfect pair.I got what I hoped: a movie that doesnt treat me like a 10-year old. Edge of tomorrow is smart, entertaining, exciting and fun. Its an original movie as well, not a sequel or a remake (although I hear it might be inspired by a novel or graphic novel).Tom Cruise - who plays a slightly different character than usually - is good, he always brings his best. He cares about his projects and demands to do as much stunts as possible. His passion can be seen here too and he is again a joy to watch, but this isnt a movie for Cruise to carry. Liman and McQuarrie carry this movie with smart pacing, transitions and that certain magic good filmmakers seem to be able to harness at will.Emily Blunt isnt a useless sidekick, but a strong and likable character. Not annoyingly strong on the surface like some feminist ball-busting fantasy, but a real character and deserves every minute of her screen time. Bill Paxton was fun to see as a hard-ass sergeant, and Brendan Gleeson was good as well - even though his screen time is limited. All the main actors work well together, if a scene is shared.The movie flows in an interesting way and it likes to surprise you. Im not talking about forced twists, Im talking about that special situation where you dont know what happens next. Ive missed that feeling. I didnt have to pretend to care about the movie, I was interested in every minute of it. This happens rarely. And when it ends, youre satisfied. No setting up sequels, no ambiguous crap, just a solid, fitting ending.Unlike Cruises last sci-fi film Oblivion, this is definitely an action movie. At first glance it may look like a generic sci-fi action film - and granted, sometimes (suits, aliens) it does - but theres enough personality of its own. Action looks good and the camera doesnt shake around senselessly. Also, the action never goes into that overblown mode where your senses get tired and you just dont care anymore. Well done.Edge of tomorrow is a thoroughly entertaining film. Its just a summer movie, but its a smart, fun and exciting summer movie. You dont have to make excuses for its shortcomings to enjoy it. Its quality filmmaking and certainly a positive surprise.9/10, will buy on blu-ray. I recommend this to everyone. Avoid as much spoilers as you can.
